Mr. Erkki Liikanen Boosts Digital Signatures
A Member of European Commission Mr. Erkki Liikanen tested digital signing with Valimo’s demo services

November 23, 2001 - Member of the European Commission responsible for Enterprise and Information Society, Mr. Erkki Liikanen was today very impressed when using Valimo Demo Center at the HP Bazaar in Espoo, Finland. Mr. Liikanen was visiting Hewlett-Packard’s mobile e-bazaar, a partnering and networking community to develop innovations for mobile services.

In the Valimo’s demo service a money transfer order was sent to Mr. Liikanen to be approved and signed with his mobile phone. Mr. Liikanen was surprised about the easy and straightforward process of making a digital signature with a mobile phone. "From the user’s point of view, this is something it should be: easy and fast" comments Mr. Liikanen right after seeing the demo. "We have been looking for this kind of simple but still useful demo application in our projects.", Mr. Liikanen continues.

Valimo specializes in developing software for conducting secure transactions with mobile devices. The company’s main software product Valimo Validator is a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) solution providing strong authentication, network security and validation of transactions. This enables high-value services to be offered over mobile networks, preventing unauthorized access and guaranteeing information confidentiality and non-repudiation of transactions.

To be able to make digital signatures a user should have a PKI-enabled mobile phone. Typically PKI-functionalities are included in SIM-card provided by the mobile operator. In today’s demonstration the SIM-cards were provided by Radiolinja, one of the largest mobile operators in Finland.

Mr. Liikanen makes a digital signature with a mobile phone using Valimo’s demo service in Hewlett-Packard’s mobile e-bazaar.
